Winner
of the Bucks-Mont NARI 2005 Award for Residential
Interiors Over $100K
The homeowners moved from Richmond,
VA into a newly purchased, but style-challenged
home in the Elkins Park neighborhood.
They requested remodeling the
three bathrooms and kitchen, refinishing the
hardwood floors, painting the entire interior,
pressure washing and sealing the deck, adding
an awning, and a myriad of other minor conveniences
upgraded like the mailbox, doorbell, storm doors,
etc.
We were all surprised to find
beautiful parquet floors under the carpeting.
Since both are authors, they also desired a
wall of built-in bookcases to house their extensive
collection of books.
Finally, an unusual request was
made to build an observatory into the roof to
allow the homeowners to view the stars with
their telescope.
A Steelway cellar door was converted
into a roof hatch and placed on top of a curb
to allow access to the heavens while keeping
the weather out. Inside the attic, a light-void
room was built under the roof hatch to house
a telescope and desk/seating area.
The budget was less than $125,000
and took less than four months to complete.
